Lisbon sweeps 400-meter relays, boys claim team title
DES MOINES — Lisbon’s Luke Czarnecki watched his sister, Ava, help the Lions’ girls team make history.
Moments later, he took to the Drake Stadium track to do the same.
“As soon as I saw them win, I was like, we’ve gotta win,” said Czarnecki, who ran the second leg of his team’s Class 1A record-breaking 400-meter relay win Saturday at the state track and field meet. “I’ve gotta be competitive.”
That competitive partnership across the programs paid off in the form of the Lions boys’ first team title since winning three in a row from 2015-17. The girls’ 400-meter relay team (Ava Czarnecki, Peyton Robinson, Brynn Epperly and Addy Happel) won the school’s first title in the event, so in a span of about 15 minutes both Lisbon programs gave their fans a pair of milestones to savor.
“Every race they are amazing,” Happel, the anchor, said of her teammates. “Peyton gets us a great start and Ava just extends it. Then Brynn extends it and I just have to finish.”
Miles Thompson wants to be remembered for more than championships
DES MOINES — Miles Thompson is a sprinter, one of the best that the state has ever seen.
But he wants to be remembered as more than a guy who ran fast.
“It’s not about breaking records or anything like that,” the senior from Cedar Rapids Washington said. “I want to motivate people. I want to inspire people.”
His swan song at Drake Stadium was breathtaking.
Bound for Texas Tech University, Thompson captured the Class 4A boys’ 100- and 200-meter races Saturday at the state track and field meet.
Xavier breaks 3A state meet record in shuttle hurdle
DES MOINES — Sure, the Cedar Rapids Xavier boys’ shuttle hurdle relay team would have preferred a different path to victory.
But, as Grayson Hartman said, “That’s the way track goes.”
Particularly, the danger-filled shuttle.
Quinn Oleson, Will Hacke, Coleton Beasler-Weber and Hartman were the second team to cross in the 3A boys’ shuttle, but a Spirit Lake disqualification enabled the Saints to hoist the victory flag.
Xavier’s foursome was clocked in 58.94 seconds, a 3A state-meet record.
“I’m just very grateful,” Hacke said. “We didn’t think Quinn would be coming back (from a sprained MCL), and we went out and ran a PR.”
Owen Douglas wins crucial race to help Williamsburg share team title
DES MOINES — Williamsburg’s Owen Douglas may be the smallest defensive tackle in the state.
But he’s also the fastest.
Douglas sprinted to a Class 2A 200-meter title Saturday during the state track and field meet at Drake Stadium, then anchored the Raiders’ gold medal-winning 400-meter relay. All those points proved to be highly consequential. Williamsburg tied Mediapolis for the 2A team crown — giving it its first state track and field team title since 2002.
“I think maybe me always having my hand down, maybe that helped with my starts,” Douglas said after finishing in 42.7 seconds to capture the 200-meter title. “The kid I just ran against said I had a good start, so if me playing defensive tackle helps, then, yeah.”
'Close-knit' Solon wins second straight team title
DES MOINES — In one year, partially out of necessity, Gracie Federspiel transformed herself from “piece of a championship team” to “centerpiece.”
The junior blazed to the Class 3A girls’ 800-meter championship at the state track and field meet Saturday at Drake Stadium.
She was a major reason — but far from the only one — that the Spartans repeated as 3A team champions.
“There are so many pieces to this team,” Federspiel said. “I was happy I was able to contribute to the team points and make them proud. They inspire me.”
Solon picked up four top-three finishes Saturday alone and scored 79 points. Adel ADM was second with 62.
Sidney Swartzendruber leans into a sprint medley title
DES MOINES — Sidney Swartzendruber threw herself at the mercy of the finish-line gods.
Prayer answered.
Swartzendruber’s last-ditch lean at the wire sent Cedar Rapids Kennedy to victory in the Class 4A girls’ sprint medley relay at the state track and field meet Saturday at Drake Stadium.
“I tried so hard to catch up,” Swartzendruber said. “I threw myself at the finish line. I didn’t think we got it.”
