Mount Vernon wins heat, then watches and wins distance medley title

DES MOINES — Winning their heat, posting a fast time ... that was the easy part.

Watching in the aftermath ... now, that was a challenge.

“That definitely made me more nervous,” Zach Fall said.

Mount Vernon came out of the second heat and won the Class 3A boys’ distance medley relay at the state track and field meet Friday afternoon at Drake Stadium.

Caden Stimmel, Brady Erickson, Jensen Meeker and Fall put up a time of 3:31.83.

Then they watched, waited and ultimately celebrated after Pella ran 3:32.68 and Western Dubuque 3:33.97 in the final heat.

“We knew we had to go under 3:32. We needed to keep our handoffs clean,” Stimmel said.

Williamsburg's Derek Weisskopf repeats in the high jump

DES MOINES — Williamsburg’s Derek Weisskopf drew up his arms and clapped demonstratively and repeatedly.

The Raiders’ star high jumper had already secured his second consecutive title in the event during Friday’s Class 2A state tack and field meet at Drake Stadium, so he basked in the crowd’s appreciative applause as it echoed his rhythmic hand slaps.

“It feels amazing,” Weisskopf said after clearing 6-7 to claim the high jump crown. “Just like last year.”

Weisskopf also arched his body across the bar at 6-7 at last year’s state meet, so he set his sights on 6-9 and a quarter inch when he stood alone in the spotlight during Friday afternoon’s action. He failed to set that personal record, but he didn’t dwell on that. Weisskopf, a junior, will seek to achieve a three-peat next season.

    Solon is dreaming big

DES MOINES — Three best friends turned out the lights in a Des Moines-area hotel room Thursday night.

    Pillow talk ensued.

“Mia (Stahle) and Gracie (Federspiel) and I were talking Thursday night,” Solon’s Anna Quillin said. “Gracie likes to get to sleep early, but we stayed up late, talking about this race.

“We knew we were out in Lane 8, but we knew we could do it.”

That junior trio, along with Piper Stahle — Mia’s freshman sister — combined to win the Class 3A girls’ distance medley relay at the state track and field meet Friday afternoon at Drake Stadium.

Federspiel’s come-from-behind endeavor allowed the Spartans to finish in 4 minutes, 8.79 seconds.

“You don’t get a lot of opportunities like this,” Mia Stahle said. “Winning this with two of my best friends, and my sister.”

    Speaking of opportunities ...

The distance medley triumph, coupled by Sophia Stahle’s title in the 400-meter hurdles, sent Solon to the top of the 3A girls’ leaderboard heading to the final day.

Nia Howard wins a state title in an event she nearly moved on from

DES MOINES — The first time Springville senior standout Nia Howard confronted a hurdle, an overarching fear stretched from the top of her head to the tip of her spikes: Don’t trip.

“It’s a terrible race,” Howard said, smiling after leaving that fear far in the distance Friday in the Class 1A girls’ state track and field meet. “It’s so hard and it hurts.”

    Not anymore.

Howard powered past defending state champion Kiya Johnson of North Butler to win her first 400-meter hurdles state crown. Howard’s triumphant time of 1:04.90 matched the mark Johnson notched to net gold last season at Drake Stadium. Johnson settled for second Friday with a time of 1:05.27.

“I saw her on my shoulder and I think I just wanted it so bad,” said Howard, a four-sport athlete for the Orioles. “I know in my head I was saying, ‘Don’t let her pass you.’ I just opened my hands and I just crawled my way to that finish line. I think it was just I wanted it more.”

Perhaps. But at first, Howard wanted no part of the hurdles for the aforementioned reasons. She’d only competed in the event two times before running at state last season, where she placed 12th.

“At the beginning of this year, I didn’t really know if I was going to continue with this race,” Howard said. “But when my coach told me that I was, I said, ‘This is my race this year.’ And it’s my senior year, so might as well go out with a bang.”

A tense win for Iowa City West in the distance medley

DES MOINES -- Moustafa Tiea earned a title and learned a lesson.

The sophomore from Iowa City West answered a surge from Johnston’s Carson Lane to win the Class 4A distance medley relay at the state track and field meet Friday morning at Drake Stadium.

A few moments later, he received a lecture from a race official.

“My heart dropped when he pulled me aside,” Tiea said. “I thought I had just cost my team a (disqualification).”

After passing Lane in the final stretch, Tiea looked back and stuck out his tongue.

“The official told me I have a great future, and don’t let something like this ruin it,” Tiea said. “I feel so bad.”

Todd Rent, Christian Janis and Izaiah Loveless ran the first three legs for the Trojans, who were clocked in 3:27.73. Johnson finished in 3:28.18.
