Danielle Hostetler 3-peats in the 2A 3,000
DES MOINES — As the bell tolled, Mid-Prairie’s Danielle Hostetler found herself in the best position possible: Staring at the back of the leader. Lurking, not languishing — and poised to pounce.
“It’s truly a choice between, ‘Do I want to make it hurt bad enough?’” said Hostetler, who surged to her third straight title in the 3,000 meters during Thursday’s Class 2A state track and field meet. “I chose to take the temporary pain.”
She took it and ran with it. Hostetler powered past second-place finisher Hillary Trainor of Sumner-Fredericksburg as she entered the backstretch and never looked back, finishing in a gold-worthy time of 10:20.73.
Hosteleter’s three-peat in the event came on the heels of back-to-back state titles from her sister, Marie. Their older sister, Anna, won the 3,000 in 2017, so it’s been seven years since anyone not named Hostetler triumphed in the event at the 2A state meet.

‘Jump-started’ legs carry Mount Vernon’s Zach Fall to 3A boys’ 400-meter title
You’d think a hard 800 meters would take a toll on Zach Fall’s legs.
Quite the opposite.
“It really jump-started them,” Fall said after capturing the Class 3A boys’ 400-meter dash at the state track and field meet Thursday night at Drake Stadium.
A senior at Mount Vernon, Fall circled the track in 48.53 seconds, about a quarter-second ahead of Carlisle’s Braedin Zondervan.

“My sisters have taught me a lot, just about having a hard work ethic and all that,” Hostetler said. “But I also know that I am my own person, but I also love to add to their legacy.”
Hostetler bettered her previous state title-winning times by about seven and 15 seconds, respectively, so she’s not just making a name for herself. She’s setting the stage for a possible fourth straight state title next season.

CPU's Sydney Maue: A 'self-taught' silver medalist
DES MOINES -- Sydney Maue is a self-described, “self-taught” high jumper.
“We don’t have a jumps coach,” said Maue, a sophomore at Center Point-Urbana. “We’re supposed to get one next year. Hopefully that can help me get an inch or two higher.”
Another inch or two, and ... well, that would have made a big difference Thursday afternoon.
Maue cleared 5 feet, 6 inches and earned Class 3A second-place girls’ honors at the state track and field meet Thursday afternoon at Drake Stadium.
“I’m a little disappointed,” she said. “I was hoping to win.”
London Warmuth of Adel ADM won the event at 5-7. After Maue missed twice at 5-7, someone in Maue’s camp elected to put the bar at 5-8 for her last attempt.
She narrowly missed.

Marion's Osgood is runner-up in warm 3A 3,200
DES MOINES -- When the temperature rose Thursday, so did Jedidiah Osgood’s anxiety level.
“I was kind of nervous,” he said. “We had similar heat last year, and I didn’t run very well.”
There was no replay this time around. Osgood got out quickly and finished second in the Class 3A boys’ 3,200-meter run at the state track and field meet Thursday afternoon at Drake Stadium.
A senior at Marion High School, Osgood finished in 9 minutes, 27.39 seconds. Chase Lauman of Pella was the champion in 9:22.48.
“I don’t like tactical races,” Osgood said. “I’m comfortable with the lead.”

Class 1A roundup: Runner-up last year, South Winn claims girls' 4x800
DES MOINES — Maddy Jansen savored the winning moment, then collapsed.
The South Winneshiek freshman had just clinched her team’s first 3,200-meter relay title since 1999 Thursday at the Class 1A state track and field meet — and ecstasy met exhaustion at the Drake Stadium finish line.
“That’s what got me through,” said Jansen, who teamed with Billie Wagner, Josie Tieskoetter and Megan Hageman to claim gold. “Thinking about when I crossed the finish line, that feeling, and that’s all I could do. That’s all I could think about.”
The Warriors finished second in the event at last year’s state meet, so Thursday’s top-of-the-podium effort seemed a natural, but far from effortless, progression.

7:37.66: Iowa City High owns the all-time Iowa best in the boys’ 3,200-meter relay
DES MOINES — It’s not just talk any more.
It’s done. It’s in the record books.
Iowa City High and Johnston ran the fastest boys’ 3,200-meter relay race in state history Thursday morning. City’s Ammon Smith, Ayman Noreldaim, Ford Washburn and Truman Thompson zipped to an all-time Iowa best in 7 minutes, 37.66 seconds.
“I think this is the happiest I’ve ever been,” said Thompson, who anchored in 1:51.8.
“With 300 meters to go, it felt like I was already starting my kick. With 200 to go, I had to give everything.”

Linn-Mar's T.J. Jackson wins the 4A high jump
DES MOINES -- In a do-or-die scenario, T.J. Jackson did.
“I really needed this,” he said. “If I didn’t win this, I don’t know what I’d do.”
Needing to clear a career-best 6 feet, 11 inches on his final attempt of the Class 4A boys’ high jump, the senior from Linn-Mar did, with room to spare.
And that jump, eventually, determined the outcome at the state track and field meet Thursday morning at Drake Stadium.
Jackson and Iowa City High’s Matt Schaeckenbach both cleared 6-11, with Jackson the winner on misses.
“That was a lot of fun,” Schaeckenbach said. “The atmosphere was so good. The competition was great.”
