Officiating in women's basketball has always ranged from mediocre to terrifying, but for this game? I'm talking both ways, now.

    Iowa is still in it

When momentum looked riding off to Fort Worth, Iowa grabbed it for a 15-2 run in the span of 2:46. It trails by 65-57 instead of 63-42.

The Hawkeyes' bigs have much work to do on the defensive end to complete a comeback for the ages, but things are better now than a few minutes ago.

    Halftime thoughts

Jasmine Carson has actually missed 3-pointers this season more than she made them, though you'd never know it today. She has played 12 minutes, scored 21 points.

Playing the whole second quarter without a first-team All-American, LSU upped its game.

  • Nathan Ford • 4/02/23 3:37 PM Pinned

    Half: LSU 59, Iowa 42

Jasmine Carson scored 21 points on 7-for-7 shooting off the bench for the Tigers, including a banked-in heave at the buzzer. LSU made 9 of 12 attempts from 3-point distance.

"It's big for my team," Carson told ESPN's Holly Rowe. "The starters got foul trouble. I've been working for this my whole life and it just feels great to finally display it on this stage."

Iowa's Caitlin Clark had 16 points, but also three fouls.

LSU from 3 in the NCAA tournament:
    1-14
    6-19
    3-13
    1-12
    3-13

    9-12 in one half today

Clark 3 fouls (charge). Iowa's in a bind.

    First-quarter thoughts

    • The officials are calling fouls. Iowa has 7, LSU 5. Angel Reese with 2 is a very good thing for Iowa.

    • Normally, allowing 22 points in a college quarter isn't good defense, but LSU is playing good D.

    • Kim Mulkey's attire is something I remember from Siegfried and Roy.

Unfortunately, the story of the first quarter became the officiating crew. Soft fouls on both sides helped lead to two fouls for each for four starters: Iowa's Monika Czinano and McKenna Warnock and LSU's Angel Reese and Kateri Poole.

Caitlin Clark had 14 points. All five LSU starters scored.

A 4-for-5 start from 3-point range for Caitlin Clark.

Two early deep 3s for Caitlin Clark. The Hawkeyes are daring Kateri Poole to shoot and she swished a corner 3 to break a 12-12 tie. Then a Clark turnover led to a transition foul on Hannah Stuelke and free throws for Angel Reese after the media timeout.
