Thanks for following today. Be back at 9 a.m. Friday.
Clips taken from 6, 7, 7:18 and 8:33 a.m. on June 15, 2021. At 8:33 a.m. shows an officer, K-9 officer and dog.
Taken from camera under eve to left of front door - 12:04 p.m. June 14, 8:34 a.m. June 15,
Camera on north and east side of house by master bedroom 6:29 p.m. June 14, Alex is in clip. 6:31 pm.
Denlinger: Cameras were all working correctly on June 15 and other days. There was never an intruder seen in the any of the views. Nothing seen out front or backyard cameras.
Schier: Did you get clips from Ring doorbell?
Denlinger: Yes. There were four cameras. On USB drive includes clips from June 11-15, 2021.
The doorbell clips are five hours ahead. Easy to subtract five hours to get actual time.
Schier is playing those clips.
Schier: If there's a struggle, is it important to get clothing to swab?
Denlinger: Yes. Tested items: cargo shorts - Alex, red polo shirt - Alex. Cargo shorts- DNA found belonged to Alex. Polo shirt - DNA found belonged to Alex.
Denlinger: DCI lab report shows DNA profiles of Alex, Jan, Melissa and Sabrina were used to compare with evidence.
No DNA profile was developed. Jackson said he had used it. He wasn't surprised here wasn't because it would have been touch DNA.
No DNA on loading port or breach block.
Trigger area - too weak for interpretation. They found some DNA but too weak to compare. If there was multiple DNA, they would say it's a mixture.
Magazine tube - too weak.
DNA from Palm and finger prints belonged to Alex Jackson.
Schier is asking Denlinger about DNA found on .22 caliber rifle.
Denlinger: DNA swab taken from ammo box and trigger area, breach block, from loading port, magazine tube of rifle. Those would be common areas that someone would touch.
Denlinger: DNA has been used to solve cold cases. He has worked 8 cold cases.
Schier: What's touch DNA?
Denlinger: If you touch something, you leave your DNA is the thought. But that's not the case, in his experience. He hasn't gotten anything without bodily fluid.
Denlinger: He was shot in the foot by intruder and crawled to his bedroom to get his phone to call 911. He called at 8:21 a.m.
Jackson said he called 911 right away. The porch is on opposite side of house from his bedroom.
His phone in his bedroom had activity between 6 and 7 a.m. on an app. 6:53 a.m. someone is googling.
He was on the porch and his phone was in his bedroom.
Denlinger: There was 9 shell casings found behind sofa in basement. Upstairs bedroom where Melissa was found - five shell casings were found.
The 10 shots would have occured upstairs. Jackson said he encountered intruder downstairs. The master bedroom is by stairs that go downstairs.
Porch is on other side of the house - where Jackson was sleeping. He went to bed at 11 a.m.
Denlinger: Jackson said his do was an "indoor" dog.
Jackson said he heard 10 shots when he woke up that morning.
Denlinger: Jackson told him they cleaned the rifle because the last time they used it, it jammed up.
Denlinger: Jackson said his father's expectation was to get a job. If he didn't, would have to move out.
Jackson said his grades weren't going well. It was a decline from first year.
Doesn't know if he was still enrolled at that time.
Denlinger is still on the stand
Denlinger: Jackson understood his questions and didn't have a problem tracking.
Schier: What did Jackson weigh back then?
Denlinger: He weighed 320 pounds
We are back.
We are back.
Judge calls for break. Be back at 3:15 p.m.
Lacina: Telling him he's not going home. he's being charged with three oounts of murder. This is your chance to speak with them. To tell us your side of the story.
Jackson: He told them what happened.
Denlinger: He's being charged with three counts of first-degree murder.
End of video
Denlinger is telling him they don't believe his story. They know why he did it. Talked to his friends and his sister's friends. Asking him for explanation of what got you here.
Lacina: There's no proof of anyone coming and going from you house. If someone came in to murder people, they had to get lucky with finding a house with a gun they could use. You can't sit there and look me in the eye and tell me that's what happened.
Jackson: I don't know what you want from me.
Lacina: Are you ashamed?
Video:
Denlinger reads his Miranda rights again.
Jackson agrees to talk.
Denlinger: The Ring video doesn't show anyone leaving your house. It covers whole backyard. Front didn't show anyone.
Asks him to talk to them about what happened.
Jackson: Is sticking to his story about the intruder. Doesn't know how he got out.
Denlinger: Who was using your phone at 6 a.m. to get on social media?
Jackson: He doesn't know.
Denlinger is on the stand: He also spoke with Jackson after 8 p.m. at the police department. He had treatment at hospital and then brought it to department.
Next video willl be of that interview.
End of this video.
Denlinger: Your dad was concerned about how you were going to work a part time job and pay for half of college. Your grades, not having job - issue between you two.
Jackson: He was going to get summer job. Doesn't admit it was an issue.
Denlinger and Lacina come back in the room.
Investigators leave his room.
Doctor is telling him he has some fractured bones in his foot. Setting him up for surgery later that afternoon.
DEnlinger: Did you have a conversation with dad about getting a job.
Jackson: Yes. His dad didn't say it but implied that if he didn't get a job, he would have to move out.
Lacina: Have you felt different lately? Anxiety? Mental health issue can come on quickly? Bad thoughts?
Jackson: Not really.
Denlinger: Have your searched for mental health issues or depression on your phone? Medication for it?
Jackson: No.
Denlinger: Any research about shooting people or killing people? Suicide?
Jackson: No. Suicide- but not for himself.
Denlinger: It's happened before with offenders. They will find out.
We are back.
Video stopped. Judge is calling for lunch break. Be back at 1:15 p.m.
Denlinger: He thinks there's a personal reason for this. He's kept it bottled up. Evidence points to an intentional killing.
Lacina: You should have kicked in the door because there's no forced entry.
Denlinger: Not well thought out. Just decided it last night.
Lacina: Given you more than one opportunity to come clean.
It pisses her off that he has nothing to say. Nobody gets an foot injury like that.
Jackson: He took 15 hours in college and passed one class. Semester before - did OK. First year was good.
Denlinger suggests dad and mom are over achievers.
Jackson: He guesses.
Denlinger suggests school issues - him not doing well - is the problem. He did ok in school at first but then something changed. He and Lacina will understand.
Jackson doesn't say anything.
Denlinger: You don't want us leaving here thinking you did this for fun. There's some other dynamic. Maybe you will talk about later in life.
Jackson: I would never to that.
Denlinger: Mom supportive?
Jackson: yes.
Denlinger suggests sister is pain in the ass and did something to him. Maybe parents' favorite.
Jackson: Says there's nothing. They love him and his sister the same.
Denlinger: Everyone was shot in the head, except for you. Makes no sense at all.
Jackson: I didn't do it, Ok.
Lacina asking how this looks. An entire family was killed in cold blood. And you continue with this story.
Jackson: I want the guy found.
Lacina: We found him.
Jackson: You did? It wasn't me.
Lacina: No forced entry. Family members shot in head and in bed. Some unidentified male came into house. You shot your sister before she got up. You telling us we're dumb.
Denlinger: You didn't think this through. You thought about it long and hard. This is so clearly what happened. You didn't think it out because there's something going on.
Jackson says nothing.
Investigators aren't saying anything and neither is Jackson.
Lacina continues to convince him to tell them what happened. She accuses him of shooting himself.
Jackson: He didn't shoot himself. He wouldn't do that.
Lacina: You're heart is beating fast.
Jackson: Because I'm getting mad.
Lacina: Would you believe me - if told this version of events?
No evidence anyone was in the house.
We are back.
Judge calling for 15 min. break.
Lacina: No witness that anyone came to your house. You sister, mom and dad have been killed and you have a gunshot wound.
Jackson: Maybe I spooked him.
Denlinger: Asking him how many shots he heard.
Jackson: A lot. Maybe 10.
Jackson: He thought his sister was sleeping. His mom was upstairs - he assumes.
Lacina is telling him things don't add up. Asking him to be truthful.
Jackson: He is being truthful.
Denlinger: Where did you clean gun?
Jackson: He and his dad cleaned gun downstairs.
Lacina: There are too many inconsistencies.
Jackson: Admits he and sister has disagreements. Loves his sister.
Lacina: You're being cagey with us. They understand, He doesn't know them.
Jackson: He has no issues with his family. I didn't do it. I love them.
Lacina: They know nobody was in the house. The weight of what you're holding right now...
Jackson: Tells them there are cameras. Wanting to know if they checked.
Denlinger: At some point you're going to have to explain what happened. We know what happened and we want you to tell us why.
Lacina: Most people don't tell the truth right away. Once they do they feel relief.
Jackson: I told you what happened. Watched a movie the night before and ate dinner. Next morning, heard gunshots, ran downstairs. There was a man with dark clothing and green shoes. they wrestled over gun. He shot Jackson in foot. He went to room and got a belt to stop bleeding.
He saw his sister in bed. Door was open. He hopes she's all right.
He called 911.
It's difficult to hear Jackson at times.
Lacina; Who hurt your family? There's no evidence on videos of anyone at the house.
Jackson: It's not me.
Denlinger: We're trying to div out what happened.
Jackson: I didn't do this, if that's what you're trying to say.
Lacina: Want to give you the opportunity to tell us.
Investigators are back in the room.
Denlinger: Says he needs to tell them what happened. There was no evidence that anyone was there.
Jackson: He was there. He fought him.
Lacina: Telling him they want to understand what happened. Not there to judge him. Something bad happened and she wants to understand.
Jackson: Says he doesn't have any problems with dad and mom. Says he's not the closest with his sister.
Nurses taking X-rays of his foot.
Interview continues:
Jackson: He went UI. Majoring in business. Doesn't know what he wants to do with business degree.
Investigators step out.
Jackson: They are originally from Oregon. Had planned to go to Oregon later in the summer. He goes to shooting range with dad. They usually shoot long guns. They have other guns besides the .22 caliber.
He and dad were cleaning the .22 caliber rifle the night before. It was left out.
He thinks man left after he was shot.
His dad didn't say anything to him.
They pause interview so nurse can give Jackson a tetanus shot.
Video is difficult to hear in the courtroom at times.
Video of police interview: CRPD investigators, Matt Denlinger and Sarah Lacina are interviewing Jackson.
Jackson: He pushed him man - intruder. The man told him F##k you. They struggle over gun and he was shot in the foot.
He then fell. His dad was on the floor. He thinks his sister and mother were home.
He didn't know the man.
Good morning! We will get started in a few mintues.
This morning the prosecution will continue playing the police interview with Jackson at the hospital.
