Judge is releasing jury for the day. The defense will start its case 9 a.m. Wednesday.
Thanks for following today! See you in the morning.
The prosecution rests it case.
Klein is excused.
Klein on cross: He said he didn't rely on video. It wouldn't have changed his findings or opinion.
The prosecution is playing the video of the shooting in the club and Dr. Klein is explaining what is happening to Valentine.
He was having lack of oxygen to brain stem when he was down on floor, the way his body is posturing - his hands are rotating out - it's a reflex action. He is probably not conscious. He is in process of dying.
The entrance wound to his hand was probably from him raising his hand to block his face, Klein said.
Klein: Multiple gunshot wounds is cause of death. Homicide is manner of death.
More than one gunshot injury could have caused his death.
Klein: Another bullet entered his right shoulder from back and exited front part of shoulder.
The next gunshot scraped along skin on his left shoulder.
Gunshot injury to his left hand and exited his palm.
Klein: Three back wounds, two upper back near middle and slightly lower on right side, and one lower back on right side.
The first one didn't hit the spinal cord. The second upper back wound was most significant in causing immediate fatality. It hit heart, lungs and aorta. He had bleeding in chest cavity.
Lower back entrance wound hit the lumbar vertebrae and affected the muscle tissue.
Klein: There is soot on his right shoulder area. That shows the shot was probably fired at close range, possibly inches away.
Valentine has an entrance gunshot wound on his nose. Surrounding the entrance wound are like a burn - from gunshot. This is an intermediate range wound. If there was soot, it would mean the shooter was within closer range, like his shoulder wound.
Bullet went into left side of nose and exited through his right facial area. These wounds can cause a lot of bleeding.
Klein will identify autopsy photos from slides he created.
Klein: He performed autopsy on Valentine on April 12. He takes photos of body as it is, then washes body to help identify wounds or injuries. He does an internal exam and order any tests such as, toxicology.
Even if injuries are obvious, they still follow the same procedures and tests to make sure there is an accurate cause of death and manner of death.
Dr. Dennis Klein, forensic pathologist and chief state medical examiner, takes the stand. He will testify about the autopsy on Valentine.
We are back. They are bringing in the jury.
We are breaking for lunch and will be back at 1:30 p.m.
Prosecution's next witness won't be in Cedar Rapids until this afternoon. They will find out what time the witness will be here.
Jury is excused for now.
The defense is objecting. They didn't think this should be allowed because it's prejudicial to Walker.
Judge Chappell overrules objection and allows it.
Waller is excused.
Bonnie Waller, legal assistant for Linn County Attorney's Office, takes the stand.
Waller: She obtained a certified record of disposition from Johnson County on Walker, which shows he has a previous felony conviction.
One of Walker's charges in this case is felon in possession of a firearm, so the prosecution has to prove he has been convicted of a felony.
Hart: There were eight 9 mm cartridges submitted.
Hart is excused.
The jury is back in the courtroom and the trial will continue.
Hart continues her testimony.
Hart: No firearm was received for testing. Eight shell cartridges were tested. She compared the markings to determine if they came from the same firearm. The unique markings on the cartridge casings help her make those comparisons.
The jurors are still out.
The defense is asking the prosecution to ask a clarifying question to clear this up.
The prosecution has agreed and will also redact the exhibit.
Meyerdirk is objecting because the criminalist mentioned a gun was tested but there was no gun found in the Valentine shooting, only in the other Taboo murder case involving Timothy Rush.
Hart only tested shell casings in this case.
Judge is asking the prosecution to redact any information from exhibit not related to Walker case.
The defense keeps objecting. Judge calls for recess. Jurors will be on break.
Hart: She tested shell casings in the fatal shooting of Valentine.
Kristin Hart, DCI criminalist in the firearms and toolmark section, takes the stand.
Joecken said Walker didn't bring up self defense. Investigators asked him if it was self-defense and he said he didn't know what they were talking about.
Joecken is excused.
On cross, Meyerdirk asked if it's common for people for not to be truthful and not show up for interviews.
Joecken said yes.
Victims also aren't always truthful, Meyerdirk asked.
Joecken agreed.
Joecken: He investigated shooting of Valentine and interviewed Walker April 18. He identified Walker from the surveillance video.
Walker was asked if he was at the club that night and Walker said it didn't "ring a bell." Walker denied it was him on the video. He denied knowing Valentine. He said who the "f##k is that?"
Walker asked if he knew "Roscoe" - Valentine's nickname. Walker started talking about a rapper named Roscoe.
CR police investigator Chip Joecken takes the stand.
Good morning all! We will get started in a few minutes. The prosecution will continue its case today and the defense could begin its case as early as tomorrow.
There was a violation of the expanded media coverage rules and Judge Chappell has ruled there will be no cameras in the courtroom for the rest of testimony. However. cameras will be allowed during closing arguments.
