Charlie Jones had some sizzle, but Iowa earned most important statistic in reunion
Charlie Jones’ high usage against Iowa was an incentive for him to transfer to Purdue. Ultimately, though, Iowa earned the most important statistic, The Gazette's John Steppe writes.
Iowa offense now complements its defense instead of insulting it
Iowa thoroughly outgained and outscored Purdue in a dominant 24-3 decision, The Gazette's Mike Hlas writes.
Game Report: Iowa 24, Purdue 3
The Gazette's Mike Hlas takes a look at the turning point, key numbers and notes from Iowa's win over Purdue.
Highlights from Iowa's 24-3 win over Purdue
Iowa football cruises past Purdue with well-rounded attack
Iowa's offense, defense and special teams all thrived in a 24-3 win over Purdue, The Gazette's John Steppe writes.
Final: Iowa 24, Purdue 3
Iowa (+3.5) won as a road underdog, getting a cathartic win against a Purdue team that had won four of the last five in the series entering this year.
The Hawkeyes improved to 5-4 overall and 3-3 in the Big Ten. Purdue has the same record.
Kaleb Johnson hits 200 yards
A milestone day for Iowa freshman running back Kaleb Johnson, who on this drive reached 200 yards rushing for the game. He has exactly 200 yards on 22 carries, with a touchdown.
Iowa leads 24-3 with 2:31 to go.
#Hawkeyes RB Kaleb Johnson (barring any negative rushes) will be the first Iowa player to rush for 200 yards in a game since Akrum Wadley had 204 yards at Northwestern in 2015.

A penalty and a sack
An offensive pass interference penalty backed Purdue up to third-and-23 at its 29, where Joe Evans ripped down Aidan O'Connell for a 9-yard loss that brought out the Purdue punt unit (4:44 4th).
Drew Stevens doinks a field goal
A rare miss for Iowa freshman kicker Drew Stevens. His 44-yard field-goal attempt hit the left upright.
Iowa still leads 24-3 with 7:31 left.
Purdue turns it over on downs
Aidan O'Connell had Charlie Jones open on fourth-and-2 from the Purdue 28, but his throw was behind and incomplete (8:56 4th). Cooper DeJean broke up a third-and-2 pass.
O'Connell is now 20-for-42 (48%) with two interceptions.
Tory Taylor launches a 70-yard punt
The good news about Iowa's offense slowing down in the fourth quarter is we get to watch Tory Taylor punt with a 20-25 mph wind at his back.
He booted one 70 yards into the end zone for a touchback (10:13 4th).
Purdue punts down 21
Purdue converted fourth-and-1 from its 26 with an 11-yard throwback to tight end Payne Durham. But two incomplete passes and a completion for no gain followed, with Iowa's swarming defense giving the Boilermakers no space.
On fourth-and-10 from the 37, Purdue punted, downed at the Iowa 32 (12:25 4th).
End 3rd: Iowa 24, Purdue 3
Other than Kaleb Johnson's 75-yard touchdown run, the Iowa offense gained only 27 yards in the third quarter. But with the way the defense is playing, the offense has already done plenty.
Purdue totaled 55 yards and averaged 3.1 per play in the third quarter. Four of its last six drives have ended in Iowa territory and it has only three points to show for it.
Purdue turns it over on downs
A Purdue drive that started at the Iowa 45 went nowhere after a first-down Devin Mockobee 10-yard run.
Deontae Craig sacked Aidan O'Connell on third-and-8, then Joe Evans lit him up as he threw incomplete on fourth-and-13 (3:27 3rd).
Delay game on 4th down leads to Purdue punt
Purdue converted fourth-and-1 with a run up the middle but, lined up to go for it on fourth-and-8 from the Iowa 39 a few plays later, it was flagged for delay of game. The Boilermakers sent out the punt team on fourth-and-13 and Iowa will take over at its 11 (7:21 3rd).
The highlight for Iowa's defense was probably Riley Moss' hit on former teammate Charlie Jones. Jones actually got behind the defense on third-and-8 before the delay of game, but Aidan O'Connell's pass was too far.

Touchdown Iowa
Kaleb Johnson was already having a big day, with 110 yards of offense in the first half.
And then he bounced around a Purdue linebacker and sprinted past the rest of the defense for a 75-yard touchdown run on the second play of the second half. That's the longest offensive play of the season for the Hawkeyes.
Huge day for the true freshman.

Halftime: Iowa 17, Purdue 3
The Iowa offense, averaging 248.6 yards, in its first eight games, totaled 258 in the first half here. Spencer Petras completed 10 of 15 passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns, the first TDs of the season for Sam LaPorta and Nico Ragaini. Kaleb Johnson ran for 93 yards on 12 carries.
Purdue's Aidan O'Connell threw two interceptions, to Kaevon Merriweather and Seth Benson, part of an 11-for-22 first half for 111 yards. The Boilermakers had 153 yards of offense. Charlie Jones caught six passes for 78 yards.
Purdue gets on the board
Lukas Van Ness threw Aidan O'Connell down for a 15-yard loss on third-and-goal from the 2, forcing Purdue to settle for a field goal. Mitchell Fineran kicked a 34-yard field goal to get the Boilermakers on the board.
Van Ness' sack made up for a hands to the face penalty that tacked on 15 yards to what was already a 15-yard gain via Charlie Jones making a terrific catch in traffic to get Purdue into the red zone. Devin Mockobee then ran 15 yards to the 2 on the next play.
It was an 11-play, 53-yard drive, aided by a holding penalty on Cooper DeJean on a fourth-and-1 incomplete pass from the Purdue 39. But it looks like the Hawkeyes will hold Purdue out of the end zone in the first half.

Iowa settles for 3
Drew Stevens kicked a 26-yard field goal to extend the Iowa lead to 17. The Hawkeyes converted an interception into points for the second straight drive.
Kaleb Johnson made a big impact, breaking multiple tackles for a 44-yard gain on the first play of the drive, then picking up 14 yards on a screen pass one play after a sack. Rushes of 9 and 2 yards set Iowa up with first-and-goal. But he also ran into Arland Bruce IV taking a handoff for a second-and-goal loss on a miscommunication with Petras. Petras was sacked by Lawrence Johnson and Khordae Sydnor on third-and-goal.
In all, it was a 10-play, 77-yard drive.

Another Iowa interception
One play after Riley Moss was flagged for holding before he intercepted a pass, an Aidan O'Connell overthrow resulted in a second straight interception.
This time, Iowa linebacker Seth Benson dove to come up with the pick at the Iowa 15 (11:32 2nd).
Iowa defensive lineman Logan Lee returned on this drive and batted down a pass.

Touchdown Iowa
The Iowa offense is on fire, folks.
The Hawkeyes needed just three plays to go 51 yards and find the end zone for the second time in the first two-plus minutes of the second quarter.
After a 22-yard Spencer Petras pass to Luke Lachey, Petras found Nico Ragaini, who pulled away from the Purdue defense for a 29-yard touchdown catch.

Kaevon Merriweather intercepts an overthrown pass
Purdue QB Aidan O'Connell looked for a big gain over the middle, but the ball was high and over the hands of a leaping Iowa transfer Tyrone Tracy Jr. That's where Iowa's Kaevon Merriweather was waiting and found the ball hit him in the chest at the Iowa 49 to come up with his third pick of the season (13:31 2nd).

Touchdown Iowa
Iowa's offense suddenly had to go against the wind as the first quarter ended, but it didn't matter.
Spencer Petras hit Sam LaPorta for 14-yard gain to convert third-and-8 from the Purdue 30. On the next play, Petras went back to LaPorta for a 16-yard touchdown pass to give Iowa the lead.
It was a nine-play, 91-yard drive for the Hawkeyes that included 71 yards receiving for LaPorta and his first touchdown of the season.

End 1st: Iowa 0, Purdue 0
Iowa connected on a big play of its own. Spencer Petras found Sam LaPorta for a 41-yard gain on the second play of the drive.
Kaleb Johnson converted a third-and-1 with a 6-yard run, but Lawrence Johnson sacked Spencer Petras for an 8-yard loss on the next play. Now, with the quarter flipping, Iowa will be going against the wind.
Iowa true freshman Jaziun Patterson got a carry on this drive as well, picking up 1 yard on second-and-2.
The Hawkeyes had 92 first-quarter yards, the Boilermakers 90.
The over/under on this game has dropped from 39.5 at kickoff to 31.5.

Charlie Jones flips field position
Backed up at its 4, Purdue turned to its playmaker. Charlie Jones got behind the defense and reeled in a 41-yard pass from Aidan O'Connell on second down.
The Boilermakers couldn't go any farther, though. O'Connell's third-and-4 pass, a rare throw that wasn't intended for Jones, was overthrown and hit the hands of Iowa's Riley Moss. The Hawkeyes got it back at their 9 (3:40 1st).

Arland Bruce IV hurt
UPDATE: Bruce returned to the game in the second quarter.
...
Iowa's Arland Bruce IV left the field clutching his right shoulder area after a first-down carry for 4 yards. He eventually went to the locker room.
That followed a 9-yard Spencer Petras completion to Diante Vines, but on third-and-5, after Iowa used its second timeout, Petras' pass to Luke Lachey was overthrown.
Tory Taylor unleashed a 55-yard punt that was downed at the Purdue 4 (5:51 1st).

Logan Lee limps off the field
UPDATE: Lee returned to the game in the second quarter.
...
Iowa defense lineman Logan Lee limped off the field with a right leg injury.
A holding penalty on Riley Moss covering Charlie Jones gave Purdue positive yardage, but the Boilermakers couldn't do much else on their second drive. Iowa took over at its 23 after a 33-yard Jack Ansell punt (7:54 1st).
I'm going to make a premature judgment here, and suggest this Iowa-Purdue game is tedious.
— Mike Hlas (@Hlas) November 5, 2022
Iowa picks up a first down but that's it
Kaleb Johnson picked up 9 yards on Iowa's first play from scrimmage and the Hawkeyes picked up a first down with a QB sneak. But Diante Vines couldn't haul in a second-down Spencer Petras deep ball and his third-and-7 pass was off the mark. A 1-for-3 start for Petras.
Tory Taylor's punt went 67 yards and bounced into the end zone (10:31 1st).
Purdue punts in Iowa territory
Iowa transfer Charlie Jones was targeted three times on Purdue's first drive, but he only had one catch for a 6-yard gain, with the other two balls off the mark.
Jack Ansell's punt into the wind went 21 yards to the Iowa 20 (12:42 1st).
Iowa football pregame injury report
From The Gazette's John Steppe at Ross-Ade Stadium:
• WR Brody Brecht is not participating in warmups. Also no DB Terry Roberts.
• RB Gavin Williams is participating in warmups today. Exited last week's game with an ankle injury.
• OL Gennings Dunker is participating in warmups.
It's going to be windy
Iowa's already struggling passing offense is going to have another challenge. Of course, so will Purdue's prolific passing offense. Should be interesting.
