Game Report: Ohio State Buckeyes 54, Iowa Hawkeyes 10
The Gazette's Mike Hlas has numbers and notes from Iowa's lopsided loss.
Iowa’s defense can only put out so many fires in 54-10 blowout loss to No. 2 Ohio State
Offensive ineptitude prevents Hawkeyes from keeping up with second-ranked Buckeyes, The Gazette's John Steppe writes.
Final: No. 2 Ohio State 54, Iowa 10
The Buckeyes (-30.5) covered.
Iowa is now 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the Big Ten. Ohio State is 7-0, 4-0.
Iowa fumbles
Iowa's sixth turnover of the game is a Kaleb Johnson fumble, recovered by Palaie Gaoteote IV at the Ohio State 44 (5:36 4th).
Touchdown Ohio State
C.J. Stroud flipped a 3-yard touchdown pass to Mitch Rossi and the Buckeyes surpassed 50 points.
Keavon Merriweather came up with a goal-line interception a few plays earlier but it was wiped out by offsetting penalties.
It was an eight-play, 40-yard drive after an Iowa turnover on downs.
From Mike Hlas: This is the most points scored against Iowa since 1995, and the Buckeyes have just 338 yards.

Touchdown Ohio State: Stroud picks apart Iowa defense
C.J. Stroud make back-to-back-to-back fantastic throws for gains of 27, 18 and 13 yards to Emeka Egbuka, Marvin Harrison Jr. and Egbuka (who made great catches in traffic).
That last one was a touchdown pass to extend the Buckeyes' lead. It was a four-play, 55-yard drive, all Stroud completions after a false start penalty.

Iowa turns it over on downs
Alex Padilla completed 2 of 5 passes for 14 yards on his second drive. On fourth-and-5 from the Ohio State 45, he scrambled left and pretty much threw it away (6:37 3rd).
Touchdown Ohio State on 4th down
On its fifth drive that started in Iowa territory, Ohio State finally scored a touchdown after four prior field goals.
The Buckeyes had to convert on fourth down to do it, with C.J. Stroud rolling left and finding Marvin Harrison Jr. for a 6-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-1. It was a four-play, 15-yard drive.

Alex Padilla's first pass is intercepted
Spencer Petras turned it over three times. Alex Padilla has already turned it over twice, on just three plays. His pass was a little overthrown, off the hand of Sam LaPorta and into the hands of Ohio State's Tanner McCalister at the Iowa 15.

Halftime: Ohio State 26, Iowa 10
Both teams scored defensive touchdowns. Iowa limited Ohio State to field goals on four drives that started in Iowa territory.
Ohio State averaged 3.9 yards per play, Iowa 2.2. The Hawkeyes totaled just 67 yards.
Iowa QB Spencer Petras was 6-of-14 passing for 49 yards and two interceptions, one that was returned for a touchdown.
Pick-6 Ohio State
Spencer Petras' third turnover of the first half results directly in Ohio State points. Iowa's defense won't be able to bail out the offense here.
On the first play of the drive, Petras threw over the middle and Tommy Eichenberg easily picked it off and returned it 15 yards for a touchdown.

Same story: Iowa's defense keeps OSU out of the end zone
On its fourth drive of the first half that started in Iowa territory, Ohio State settled for its fourth field goal. The Buckeyes did convert a fourth-and-2 from the Iowa 24, with C.J. Stroud finding Emeka Egbuka for a 13-yard gain, but incomplete passes followed on second and third downs.
Noah Ruggles kicked a 26-yard field goal to complete an eight-play, 24-yard drive.
Unlike turnovers prior, OSU got excellent field position the traditional way here. After Iowa's offense went three-and-out backed up against its own goal line, Egbuka returned the punt 16 yards to the Iowa 32.

Drew Stevens cuts the lead to 6
Iowa's Drew Stevens kicked a 49-yard field goal.
It was a 10-play, 44-yard drive aided by a somewhat questionable pass interference penalty on third-and-9. The highlight was a 17-yard Spencer Petras pass to Sam LaPorta, but two of the next three plays went for negative yardage and Iowa settled for three.
Ohio State 16, Iowa 10 (10:07 2nd)
Another Ohio State field goal
For the third time in the first quarter, Iowa's defense stopped an Ohio State drive that started in Iowa territory from reaching the end zone.
Noah Ruggles kicked his third field goal, a 35-yarder, to end the first quarter. The Buckyes totaled 17 yards on that five-play drive.
End 1st: Ohio State 16, Iowa 7
A fake punt goes wrong
Iowa punter Tory Taylor tried to run for the first down on fourth-and-6 from the Iowa 30, but was stopped for only a 4-yard gain. It looks like Taylor made that decision on his own, thinking he had an advantage, but the OSU defenders recovered quickly for a turnover on downs.

Ohio State takes 3 again
Iowa's defense certainly is doing its part. It's scored a touchdown and held Ohio State to field goals after two Iowa turnovers in its own territory.
This time, Noah Ruggles snuck in a 41-yard field goal. OSU totaled only 4 yards on four plays after the fumble. Keavon Merriweather brought down Miyan Williams for a 3-yard loss on third-and-3 from the Iowa 20.
Ohio State 13, Iowa 7 (4:30 1st)
Iowa turns it over again
Spencer Petras gave Ohio State the ball for the second time in the first 8:20. Zach Harrison easily got past the Iowa offensive line, sacked Petras and knocked the ball free. Lathan Ransom recovered at the Iowa 27.

Touchdown Ohio State: Buckeyes retake the lead
That looked more like the Ohio State offense we expected to see. Miyan Williams ran in a 2-yard touchdown on third-and-goal to complete a 10-play, 75-yard drive.
C.J. Stroud was 4-for-4 for 47 yards on the drive.

Touchdown Iowa: Joe Evans scoops and scores
Is Iowa's best chance for a touchdown today on defense? Well, Joe Evans just greeted Ohio State quarterback CJ Stroud with a punishing hit on first-and-10. Evans got up, picked up the ball and returned it 11 yards for a touchdown.

Ohio State is lucky to get a 46-yard field goal from Noah Ruggles to take the lead. It was a four-play, 1-yard "drive."

First play is an interception
Well, it could be a long day. On the first play from scrimmage, Iowa quarterback Spencer Petras rolled left and threw it right to Ohio State's Tanner McAlister. The Buckeyes take over at the Iowa 29.
Hawkeye fans of course remember the last time these two teams met, Amani Hooker had a pick-6 on the first play of a 55-24 Iowa win.
