    Iowa's defense is finally overmatched

No. 4 Michigan outlasted the Hawkeyes, 27-14, Saturday despite a late flicker of hope from the Iowa offense, The Gazette's John Steppe writes.

    Petras sacked twice

Iowa forced a three-and-out but another drive to the red zone was not in the cards. Not even close. Spencer Petras was sacked on back-to-back plays by Mike Morris, hurried by Morris, sacked by Taylor Upshaw and Eyabi Amoa and hit by Amoa as he threw on fourth-and-24 to force a turnover on downs with 2:30 left.

Iowa turns it over on downs

One of the Hawkeyes' best drives of the season doesn't have a good result. A 13-play, 78-yard drive ends at the Michigan 5 with a 1-yard completion on fourth-and-2 with 5:41 remaining.

Spencer Petras completed 7 of 7 passes on the drive for 62 yards, including a perfect ball to Luke Lachey for a 34-yard gain. Nico Ragaini and Sam LaPorta produced with yards after the catch on great individual efforts. But Iowa can't find the end zone.

    End 3rd: Michigan 20, Iowa 0

Iowa will start the fourth quarter with first-and-goal at the Michigan 2 after a 28-yard Spencer Petras pass to Nico Ragaini. This drive has also included a 17-yard Petras pass to Monte Pottebaum to convert a third-and-1.

Iowa had moved the ball to the 2 via a 16-yard pass to a crossing Ragaini, but the gain was wiped out by an (not exactly obvious) unnecessary roughness penalty on Logan Jones.

  • Nathan Ford • 10/01/22 1:19 PM Pinned

    Iowa has good field position

Iowa will start its next drive at the Michigan 44 with 3:23 left in the third quarter. Will it matter?

The offense has Deontae Craig to thank. He hit J.J. McCarthy, forcing a backward pass that resulted in a loss of 21 and forced the Wolverines to punt from their end zone.

  • Nathan Ford • 10/01/22 1:13 PM Pinned

    Nearly a pick-6, then a sack

An illegal block backed Iowa up to second-and-21. Spencer Petras then nearly threw a pick-6 that bounced off the hands of Michigan's DJ Turner and was sacked by Mike Morris for an 8-yard loss on the next play.

Michigan was flagged for illegal block in the back on the punt return and starts at its 19, 4:48 3rd.

    Michigan takes a 20-point lead

Just like the first drive of the game, Michigan marched right down the field on its opening possession of the second half.

J.J. McCarthy rolled right and threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Donovan Edwards to complete a 10-play, 67-yard drive that took 5:32.

As John Steppe points out, Michigan now has more first downs (23) than Iowa has total plays (21).

Not an ideal (but probably expected) start to the second half for Iowa

Mason Graham sacked Spencer Petras for a 9-yard loss on the first play of the second half. Iowa went three-and-out and punted and Michigan will start at its 33, 13:23 3rd.

    Halftime: Michigan 13, Iowa 0

Jake Moody kicked a 35-yard field goal with nine seconds remaining in the half. Sebastian Castro broke up J.J. McCarthy's third-and-12 pass to the end zone to force the Wolverines to settle for three points again.

A questionable pass interference penalty called on Castro on second-and-17 kept the Michigan drive on track. But the Wolverines shot themsevles in the foot with a delay of game on third-and-7 at the Iowa 12.

Michigan outgained Iowa 236-91 and had a 20:39-9:12 advantage in time of possession.

    Iowa drive derailed by penalties

Iowa was flagged for holding and clipping penalties that backed it up. Fox analysts Joel Klatt and Mike Perreira agreed that the clipping call was a bad one but it forced a first-and-25 the Hawkeyes couldn't recover from.

Michigan has it at its 22 with 3:29 left in the half.

    Michigan settles for 3

Jake Moody kicked a 44-yard field goal to extend the Michigan lead.

It was a 13-play, 54-yard drive that took 7:00. The Wolverines were seemingly running the ball at will, but Jack Campbell blew up an option play on third-and-4 for a 2-yard loss.

Michigan already has 100 yards rushing (5 per carry).

    End 1st: Michigan 7, Iowa 0

There were some positive developments for the Iowa offense at the end the first quarter, but nothing to show for it. The Hawkeyes got their first first down of the game via a defensive holding penalty, then Spencer Petras connected with Luke Lachey for a 26-yard pass to the Iowa 48.

Petras hit another tight end, Sam LaPorta, for an 8-yard gain and a first down but then missed a wide-open Lachey over the middle. On third-and-10 from the 42, Petras was pressured and hit by Mazi Smith and threw incomplete.

The Hawkeyes punted from the Michigan 42. It resulted in a touchback. The Wolverines outgained the Hawkeyes 115-45 in the first 15 minutes.

    A trip helps Iowa

The Wolverines were driving again, but QB J.J. McCarthy tripped on an offensive lineman's foot for a 5-yard loss on first down from the Iowa 45 and the Wolverines ended up punting on fourth-and-9 from the Iowa 44.

Iowa starts its second drive at its 9, 3:07 1st.

    Iowa goes three-and-out

Two runs picked up 6 yards, then Spencer Petras' third-and-4 pass into double coverage went off the hands of a stretching Sam LaPorta. Michigan has it at its 21 after a 52-yard Tory Taylor punt, 8:19 1st.

Michigan opens with a dominant TD drive

An 11-play, 75-yard drive to begin the game for Michigan that took 5:07. Ronnie Bell scored on a 16-yard touchdown run.

The Wolverines faced only one third down on the drive, a third-and-1 that Blake Corum converted. Not a promising start considering Iowa's offense hasn't even taken the field.

Mike Hlas points out that's the first first-half touchdown Iowa has allowed this season.
