Hlas: Cyclones shut down, shut up the Hawkeyes and their silent offense
Here's Gazette columnist Mike Hlas' take.
Iowa TE Sam LaPorta defends QB Spencer Petras
“The average fan or the average reporter — you guys might shit on (Petras), but I don’t," LaPorta said. "I see what he does in practice, and I see the work he puts in on film and everything.”

Iowa State ends Cy-Hawk series losing streak with 99-yard touchdown drive
Gazette correspondent Rob Gray has reaction from the Cyclones after their win at Iowa.

Iowa's offense struggles again
This time, the defense and special teams couldn't bail out the Iowa offense, The Gazette's John Steppe writes.
Final: Iowa State 10, Iowa 7
Improbably, Iowa had a chance to tie the game. A 15-yard pass from Spencer Petras to Alec Wick was followed by offside and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties (both on a play Petras had fumbled and ISU recovered). Petras then threw a 9-yard pass to Sam LaPorta with nine seconds left, but Aaron Blom missed a 48-yard field goal in the rain as time expired.
The Cyclones win the Cy-Hawk Trophy for the first time since 2014.
Iowa State statistically dominated this game, outgaining the Hawkeyes 313-150. Turnovers helped keep Iowa in it, but a go-ahead, 99-yard drive that included six third-down conversions ended up being the difference for the Cyclones.
Iowa State is 2-0, Iowa 1-1.

Iowa State turns it over on downs
Iowa will have one last chance, at its 27 with 38 seconds left.
Iowa turns it over on downs
Spencer Petras completed an 11-yard pass to Sam LaPorta on the first play of the drive. Four straight incomplete passes followed, including one that slipped away from Arland Bruce IV in the rain on fourth-and-10. Iowa State has it at the Iowa 33 with 2:18 left and one Iowa timeout remaining.
Iowa gets it back in the pouring rain
Iowa State picked up a first down, but it has started to rain heavily at Kinnick Stadium. Three straight runs went nowhere and the Cyclones punted. Iowa has it at the 22 with 3:06 left.
Iowa goes three-and-out
As expected, by now. Spencer Petras completed a 9-yard pass to Sam LaPorta on first down, but then a reverse lost yardage and Petras missed Arland Bruce IV on third-and-5. ISU has the ball back, up three, at its 29 with 7:02 remaining.
Iowa State takes the lead
A looooong Iowa State drive ends in the end zone. Hunter Dekkers tossed an 8-yard touchdown pass to Xavier Hutchinson. It was the sixth third-down conversion of the drive, which also benefited from a questionable late-hit penalty called on Cooper DeJean.
All in all, it's a 21-play, 99-yard drive that lasted 11:49. Impressive and quite possibly game-winning. By the way, Iowa's offense has a total of 111 yards in the entire game.

End 3rd: Iowa 7, Iowa State 3
Iowa State is on the move as the fourth quarter begins. The Cyclones have converted three third downs, with a Jirehl Brock 6-yard run and Hunter Dekkers passes of 6 and 10 yards to Jaylin Noel and Xavier Hutchinson. ISU is at its 43.
Iowa fumbles at the goal line
Iowa fullback Monte Pottebaum, reaching for the end zone, dropped the ball and Iowa State recovered at the 1. Spencer Petras connected with Arland Bruce IV for a 9-yard gain on third-and-2, but Bruce stumbled before he could reach the end zone. The Hawkeyes come up empty after the blocked punt.
The play stood after video review. Both teams have now lost fumbles at the goal line.

Another blocked punt
For the second time in the game, Lukas Van Ness gets his hand on an Iowa State punt. This one gives Iowa the ball at the ISU 20.
The north end zone fans helped, too. On third-and-2 at the ISU 13, a false start pushed the Cyclones back 5 yards. A third-and-7 blitz helped force an incompletion and the punt.
Last week, @HawkeyeFootball tallied two safeties.

This week, it has two blocked punts. pic.twitter.com/iuHYce0p0p
Iowa goes nowhere
Spencer Petras overthrew Alec Wick on third-and-9. Wick had a shot at it, but it slipped off his fingers. Iowa can't take advantage of the turnover at midfield and now has five straight three-and-outs. Tory Taylor's punt went 45 yards, out of bounds at the Iowa 5, 9:27 3rd.

Terry Roberts picks off Hunter Dekkers
Iowa State's first drive of the second half ends in a turnover, as Hunter Dekkers threw it right to Iowa cornerback Terry Roberts at the Iowa 49. Roberts didn't celebrate, instead upset that he couldn't stay on his feet for a big return. That might have been Iowa's best chance at points.

Iowa goes three-and-out
Leshon Williams lost 3 yards on first down, a pass went for no gain, then Gavin Williams got his first carry for third-and-13 and gained 8 yards. Tory Taylor's punt bounced into the end zone, 12:43 3rd.
Iowa has not picked up a first down in its last four drives.

Spencer Petras starts the second half
BTN's Rick Pizzo said he asked Kirk Ferentz if he considered putting Alex Padilla in at quarterback to start the second half. Ferentz said no.
Half: Iowa 7, Iowa State 3
A familiar score for Hawkeye fans. It's been ugly again, with a blocked punt leading to a 16-yard "drive" for the only touchdown. But Iowa's defense has made big plays again, including a fumble and interception in the end zone.
Iowa State has 180 yards of total offense at the half, Iowa 86.
ISU's Hunter Dekkers is 15-of-24 passing for 125 yards and an interception. Jirehl Brock rushed nine times for 46 yards and lost a key fumble. Xavier Hutchinson caught seven passes for 70 yards.
Iowa's Spencer Petras is struggling again. He's 5 of 11 for 33 yards and a pick. Leshon Williams has 36 yards rushing and a TD on 11 carries.
Iowa takes it right back
Hunter Dekkers lobbed a pass into the corner of the end zone that Iowa's Cooper DeJean undercut and intercepted with 57 seconds left in the half. The Hawkeye defense comes up big again. Two turnovers for both teams.

Huge turnover at the end of the quarter
Iowa State is reversing that turnover ratio. Spencer Petras' third-and-8 pass was tipped and picked off by Colby Reeder, who returned it 13 yards to the Iowa 12 with 1:33 left in the first half.
It's the second Iowa (and Petras) turnover of the game. Iowa State's strategy of taking two timeouts paid off.

ISU on the board
Jace Gilbert kicked a line-drive, 22-yard field goal to cut Iowa's lead to 7-3. Aidan Bitter made the big play of the drive, toe-tapping on the sideline for a 16-yard catch on third-and-8. Hunter Dekkers delivered a perfect toss to Xavier Hutchinson for a 24-yard gain to the Iowa 5 on the next play, but the Hawkeyes held.
A third-down blitz forced a quick Dekkers pass, that Hutchinson nearly caught one-handed for a touchdown.
Iowa 7, Iowa State 3 (3:45 2nd)
Iowa should have called a timeout after the 16-yard ISU "catch" to the Iowa 29. Cyclones savvily hurried up, got the next play off, went on to 3 points.

Iowa flips field position
The Hawkeyes picked up a couple first downs, including a 10-yard Spencer Petras pass to Luke Lachey. But a high snap on third-and-5 led to a Tory Taylor punt that resulted in a touchback, 8:51 2nd.
ISU fumbles into the end zone
Huge swing here, and it's been a typical storyline lately in this Cy-Hawk series. The ball popped out of ISU running back Jirehl Brock's hands as he tried to dive into the end zone from the 1. Iowa's Logan Klemp recovered the ball in the end zone and Kaevon Merriweather gets credit for the forced fumble.
Seth Benson will be feeling a lot better now. The Iowa lienbacker had been flagged for holding on a third-down incomplete pass, giving ISU first-and-goal at the 4.
The ball comes loose and Iowa recovers it in the endzone! 🤯

End 1st: Iowa 7, Iowa State 0
Iowa seemed like it would end the first quarter on a promising drive, but instead a Spencer Petras fumble has Iowa State in good position to get on the board. The Cyclones are at the Iowa 27 after a 15-yard Jirehl Brock run.
Petras fumbles and ISU recovers
Spencer Petras was hit by Gerry Vaughn as he started to throw and Will McDonald recovered at the Iowa 49 for a big turnover with 33 seconds left in the first quarter. It's the Hawkeyes' first turnover against ISU since 2015.

Jirehl Brock converts one third down, not another
Hunter Dekkers completed passes to running back Jirehl Brock on two third-and-shorts for the Cyclones. The first, Brock lowered his shoulder and picked up the first down. The second, Cooper DeJean immediately brought him down and forced a punt at the ISU 47 after some deliberation from Matt Campbell. It went for a touchback, 4:29 1st.
Tory Taylor sighting
Spencer Petras overthrew a receiver on third-and-6, so Iowa punter Tory Taylor got to show off his leg for the first time. He unleashed a 50-yard punt and another special teams sensation, Terry Roberts, made a great tackle to prevent a return. ISU has it at its 8, 7:55 1st.

Penalty and Schulte derail ISU
Iowa State picked up a first down on its second drive, on an 11-yard Hunter Dekkers pass to Jaylin Noel. But a false start on third-and-2 (that's kind of a thing at Kinnick) was followed by a big open-field tackle from Quinn Schulte after a completion. Iowa State punted and Iowa takes over at its 19, 9:52 2nd.
Iowa is in the end zone
For the first time in 2022, Iowa has scored a touchdown. Leshon Williams' 7-yard run gave the Hawkeyes the lead. It was a two-play, 16-yard drive -- nothing guaranteed after last week's showing.

Iowa blocks ISU punt
Iowa's special teams immediately deliver excellent field position. After a three-and-out, Lukas Van Ness blocked the ISU punt and Reggie Bracy picked it up. Iowa's first drive starts at the ISU 16.
Iowa State started its first possession with two short completions to Xavier Hutchinson. On third-and-3, Hunter Dekkers couldn't find an open receiver and was brought down by John Waggoner for a 7-yard loss.

Good injury news ... for the future
Iowa could get some key receivers back soon, but it'll still be shorthanded against Iowa State.
Kirk Ferentz says Keagan Johnson may be a go for Iowa next week. Nico Ragaini is "a week or two, hopefully."

Good injury news for Iowa
After missing the opener, Iowa starting running back Gavin Williams is in uniform and available today.
