Final: Iowa 7, South Dakota State 3
South Dakota State turned it over on downs with 15 seconds left and that will do it.
Iowa's defense outscored its offense, 4-3. That's about all you need to know about this one. Oh, and Tory Taylor might have been the MVP -- the Iowa punter set up safeties for Jack Campbell and Joe Evans and averaged 47.9 yards on 10 punts.
Iowa totaled 166 yards of offense, South Dakota State 120.

Another safety
Suddenly, this is kind of a normal football score. Joe Evans got to Mark Gronowski for a sack in the end zone.

Jacks get it back
An Iowa three-and-out. Spencer Petras underthrew Alec Wick on third-and-9. South Dakota State has it at its 8 with 4:47 left.
South Dakota State offense running out of time
The Jackrabbits have managed just 122 total yards to this point.
Big stop by the #Hawkeyes' defense. Logan Lee sack, QB run for 1 yd and incompletion to force a three-and-out.
— John Steppe (@JSteppe1) September 3, 2022
Iowa will get the ball back with 6:20 to go. Iowa still up, 5-3.
More SDSU false starts
South Dakota State lined up to go for it on fourth-and-inches from its 14, but a false start backed the Jackrabbits up and led to a punt. It's their 11th penalty of the game.
And the 12th followed, another false start prior to the punt. Iowa gets the ball at midfield, 10:20 4th.
Another Quinn Schulte breakup
Making his first career start, Quinn Schulte makes another big play to break up a third-and-8 pass from the SDSU 30. Iowa has it back at its 30 with 13:18 left.
End 3rd: Iowa 5, South Dakota State 3

Cale Reeder ejected for targeting
South Dakota State loses a safety for the rest of the game. And Iowa gets 15 yards tacked on to a 27-yard gain on a Spencer Petras pass to Arland Bruce IV.
Go-ahead safety? Go-ahead safety!
The Iowa defense took matters into its own hands (with a special teams assist of course). Jack Campbell took down South Dakota State running back Isaiah Davis in the end zone for a totally real 5-3 Iowa lead.

A big play, but another Iowa drive stalls
Spencer Petras found Arland Bruce IV for a 26-yard gain on the first play of this drive, but the Hawkeyes stalled after a Nick DeJong false start and punted at midfield.
Tory Taylor continues to shine, though. His punt was downed at the 1, 4:10 3rd.

Mark Grownowski hurt
South Dakota State's starting QB received medical attention and walked off the field under his own power. Sophomore Rudy Voss now in the game.
Two plays later, left guard Ethan Vibert suffered an injury as well.
Petras nearly picked off again
Iowa was lucky not to turn it over in its own territory, with Spencer Petras' third-and-7 pass bouncing off the hands of DyShawn Gales. The Hawkeyes punted and the Jackrabbits start at their 20, 8:30 3rd.
Petras is now 6-for-16 passing for 41 yards and a pick. Iowa is averaging 1.7 yards per play.
Noah Shannon halts SDSU's first second-half drive
Isaiah Davis picked up a first down for South Dakota State with a 12-yard run. Noah Shannon brought down Mark Gronowski for a 6-yard loss second-and-12 and the Jackrabbits ended up punting. Iowa has at it at the 20 after a 7-yard Arland Bruce IV return, 9:59 3rd.
Halftime: Iowa 3, South Dakota State 3
Iowa has 56 total yards. Fifty-six. South Dakota State has 76.
The Kinnick crowd did a lot of first-half booing, including as the Hawkeyes left the field.
South Dakota State ties it up
Hunter Dustman connected on a 44-yard field goal, the first of his career, to tie the score.
Iowa safety Quinn Schulte broke up back-to-back passes to force the fourth-and-11 field-goal attempt. The second-down pass probably should have been pass interference, but his timing was perfect for a big hit on third down.
Iowa 3, South Dakota State 3, 0:15 2nd.
Petras picked off
Under pressure on third-and-10, Spencer Petras fired over the middle, right into the hands of South Dakota State linebacker Caleb Francl, who returned it 17 yards to the Iowa 38. The offense has been brutal all day, now it might really cost the Hawkeyes with 3:06 left in the half.
INTERCEPTION!

Third-and-19 completion overruled
Spencer Petras fired a 17-yard pass to Sam LaPorta on third down, but it was ruled incomplete after review. .Petras dropped the snap on the previous play and took a loss of 10.
South Dakota State starts at its 18 after a 48-yard Tory Taylor punt and 8-yard Jaxon Janke return, 6:29 2nd.
Third-down sack for Joe Evans
Iowa's Joe Evans brought down Mark Gronowski for a loss of 4 to the SDSU 14 on third-and-5. Hawkeyes get good field position again at the SDSU 49, 8:21 2nd.
By the way, South Dakota State already has five false start penalties.
Another highlight punt
Iowa started its first second-quarter drive with its biggest play of the game, a 15-yard Spencer Petras pass to Leshon Williams. But Petras missed an open Sam LaPorta, throwing behind him on third-and-3. Cooper DeJean caught Tory Taylor's 35-yard punt at the SDSU 2, 12:34 2nd.

End 1st: Iowa 3, South Dakota State 0
Iowa had a pair of drives start inside the SDSU 35 and scored just three points. The Hawkeyes have totaled 35 yards, but the defense has lived up to its expectations so far.
Iowa takes the lead
Aaron Blom's 46-yard field goal is good.
Spencer Petras' third-and-5 screen pass fell incomplete and Iowa had to settle for a field goal. Petras slammed the turf in frustration.

Arland Bruce IV's first punt return
The Iowa defense forced a three-and-out deep in SDSU territory. Bruce fielded a line-drive punt and broke multiple tackles for a 9-yard return to the SDSU 33, 2:24 1st.
Tory Taylor is the highlight of the first quarter
Leshon Williams had four carries for 19 yards, but Spencer Petras' third-and-5 pass was incomplete. Tory Taylor launched his second 55-plus-yard punt of the game to pin the Jackrabbits at their 6, 4:05 1st.
Petras' QB rating is 45.6. Iowa is averaging 2.1 yards per play.

Jackrabbits reach Iowa territory
An 18-yard pass from Mark Gronowski to Landon Wolf helped SDSU get moving, but Kaevon Merriweather made a key open-field tackle on third-and-9 to force a punt.
Punt is a touchback, 6:39 1st.
Key injury for South Dakota State
NFL Draft prospect Tucker Kraft is helped off the field.

Major loss for the Jackrabbits' offense.
Iowa comes up empty
Iowa's offense couldn't do much, gaining just 5 yards before a third-and-5 incompletion. Then Aaron Blom missed a 40-yard field goal wide left. Brutal to not take advantage of the good field position.
South Dakota State takes over at its 22, 9:31 1st.
Iowa's offensive line has given up a lot of pressure so far.

Jackrabbits go 3-and-out and shank the punt
Great first possession for Iowa's defense. Cooper DeJean started at cornerback, but Terry Roberts came in for the cash formation and made a big second-down hit.
Arland Bruce IV was the punt returner but the punt was shanked and Iowa takes over at the SDSU 27, 11:01 1st.

South Dakota State can't even snap the ball
Two straight delay of game penalties before the Jackrabbits' first play. A sold-out Kinnick was ready.
Iowa punts on its opening possession
The Hawkeyes picked up a first down on a Leshon Williams 3-yard run and Spencer Petras completed his first two passes, but Reece Winkelman sacked Petras for a 5-yard loss on third-and-10 from the Iowa 36.
After a 57-yard Tory Taylor punt, the Jackrabbits start their first drive at their own 11, 12:39 left in the first quarter.

It opened at Iowa -15.5 and was Iowa -14 last night.
Gavin Williams out
It looks like Iowa, already missing No. 1 receiver Nico Ragaini, will be without its starting running back against the Jackrabbits.
#Hawkeyes RB Gavin Williams is not participating in warmups.
