Class 5A's top-2 teams get noteworthy wins

 

No. 1 Ankeny beat crosstown rival Ankeny Centennial 17-10. Jamison Patton broke a 10-10 tie in the third quarter with a 14-yard touchdown run.

 

No. 2 Southeast Polk won at No. 5 West Des Moines Valley, 24-7. Iowa State commit Abu Sama scored two rushing touchdowns.

Good one in Grundy County

 

A No. 4 Grundy Center knocks off 1A No. 2 Dike-New Hartford.

Williamsburg ends Van Meter's streak

As if last week's win over West Delaware wasn't enough, 2A No. 6 Dubuque Wahlert spotted 3A No. 5 Davenport Assumption the first points, then scored 27 in a row to take a 20-point lead at the half. This is an Assumption team that beat 3A No. 10 Independence in Week 0.

Last week Don Bosco beat then-No. 2 Easton Valley in a thriller. The third-ranked Dons will get another ranked win tonight. They're leading No. 9 Turkey Valley by 35 at the half.

Central Lyon-GLR rolling again

 

Central Lyon/George-Little Rock, our No. 2 ranked team in Class 2A, has one of the toughest non-district schedules in the state in this two-year cycle. This year's Lions have been up to the task, though. After a blowout win over Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley last week, the Lions are cruising against 3A No. 8 Sergeant Bluff-Luton tonight.

Urbandale and Johnston moved up their kickoff time due to possible inclement weather, and the Dragons came up with a big win. Urbandale was ranked No. 4 in Class 5A.

Welcome to Week 2

 

Week 2 is all about adjustments. Your Iowa high school football team left Week 1, win or lose, probably saying it had things to clean up. How will what we learned last Friday night hold up? I'm excited to find out, while providing updates throughout the night in this here live blog.
