Final: Cubs 4, Reds 2
No playoff contenders, no cornfield home runs, not many highlights at all, but it was still a beautiful night for baseball in a unique setting with a sellout crowd of 7,823.
"It was awesome. It's just such a cool experience. Major League Baseball did an amazing job setting this all up," Cubs starting pitcher Drew Smyly told Fox Sports after the game. "Just to get out here early in the day and walk through the cornfields with all the fans, show up -- it's a small ballpark, obviously, a very intimate setting. It's fun just to be here and to hear the fans. You can hear them in the stands.
"It's just a memory that's going to stick with all of us for a long time."
Can't wait for the next one -- whenever that is.

Reds on the board
Matt Reynolds delivered for Cincinnati in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run double to right-center to cut the lead to 4-2. He replaced Jonathan India in the lineup after the Reds leadoff batter was hit in the shin by a pitch in the first inning.

Willson Contreras injured, but stays in the game
Cubs catcher Willson Contreras appeared to hurt his ankle after rounding second base and trying to get back. He was down on the field and clutching the ankle, then limped off the field. But he returned behind the plate in the bottom half of the inning.

By Mike Hlas, The Gazette
DYERSVILLE — Though Thursday’s participants were the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds, the spirit of the Field of Dreams Game may have been captured best by a man wearing a St. Louis Cardinals jersey.
The Redbirds fan had a vehicle pulled off the side of the road about a mile from the ballpark, and was offering bottled water to any slow-moving motorist who wanted some.
The price? Zero dollars, which was considerably cheaper than what it cost inside the ballpark.
Why are you doing this, a gridlocked sports writer asked the good-hearted man.
“Just because,” he said.
"Just because“ was all the answer the 8,000 fans here needed to give for attending this event. Not everything needs a cosmic purpose. Summer fun is plenty.
This technically was a home game for the 44-66 Reds, and it seemed like one in downtown Dyersville Thursday afternoon.
Cubs strike first
The Cubs take a 3-0 lead with a two-out rally in the top of the first.
Patrick Wisdom was hit by a pitch with two outs in the top of the first and Seiya Suzuki laced a double to left-center to drive him home. Nico Hoerner followed with an RBI single to left, then Ian Happ drove in Hoerner with a double to make it 3-0.

Baseball and family
The Field of Dreams is as much about family as it is about baseball. That's why Hall of Famer David Ortiz wanted to bring his son, David, to the game this year as he works for Fox.
"He's loving everything that he sees," Ortiz said on the Fox pregame show. "The cornfield, the players, how everything is going down here, he's having so much fun right now.

Joey Votto: Field of Dreams game "is a significant moment for me"
Sure, the movie "Field of Dreams" is a little cheesy. I mean, corny. But there is a reason it still stirs emotions for baseball fans. Cincinnati Reds 38-year-old first-baseman Joey Votto explained it in a Twitter thread Wednesday night.
These are pro baseball players in the middle of a 162-game grind, but this game has an extra meaning.
Watching Field of Dreams before the game tomorrow. I thought I would share a few thoughts about what the movie and this trip mean to me.
— Joey Votto (@JoeyVotto) August 10, 2022
From 8 or 9 years old, my father and I would play catch together. In retrospect, to me, it was the most important thing we did together. It strengthened our bond. In Field of Dreams, the movie ends with the main character, Ray, and the ghost of his father having “a catch”.
— Joey Votto (@JoeyVotto) August 10, 2022
Getting the opportunity to play a game at the mythical field that sowed the seeds of hope for a Major League Baseball career is a significant moment for me. Couple that with the father/son connection, and this game is an exceptional moment in my life.
