Iowa distances itself from Rutgers with fourth-quarter scoring barrage
The 2023 Iowa-Rutgers game initially had some shades of 1869 with three low-scoring quarters, but the 22nd-ranked Hawkeyes distanced themselves with a fourth-quarter scoring barrage and a comfortable 22-0 win Saturday at Kinnick Stadium.

Iowa improves to 8-2 overall and 5-2 in the Big Ten, another step closer to the Big Ten championship game.
Rutgers falls to 6-4, 3-4.
Rutgers' last five drives have ended in either a three-and-out or a turnover.

A near pick-6 for Quinn Schulte
Gavin Wimsatt tossed up a fly ball on Rutgers' first play of the drive and Iowa safety Quinn Schulte was waiting for the interception. He returned it 39 yards to the Rutgers 9.

Iowa tacks on 3
A solid drive for the offense took a hit with a dropped snap for a loss of 9 on second-and-goal from the 3. Drew Stevens kicked a 24-yard field goal to cap a 12-play, 44-yard drive.
Kaleb Brown's 13-yard run on third-and-3 from the 21 was the big play.

Early snap on third down
Rutgers center Gus Zilinskas snapped the ball before QB Gavin Wimsatt was ready on third-and-7 and Wimsatt had to chase it down for a 13-yard loss.
Iowa takes over at midfield after a 35-yard punt.

Rutgers RB Kyle Monangai, the Big Ten's leading rusher, is down with an injury.
Touchdown Iowa: Jaziun Patterson punches it in
After turning it over in the red zone to end the first half, the Hawkeyes found the end zone this time. And with the way the defense is playing, that might just about do it.
Jaziun Patterson scored on a 4-yard run to complete a nine-play, 54-yard drive. Deacon Hill was 4-for-4 passing for 39 yards on the drive.
The touchdown was confirmed after video review.
Hill found Kaleb Brown on the 2-point conversion attempt, but he was ruled down prior to cross the goal line after video review.

Hard to ask for more from Iowa's defense. Held Rutgers to 30 total yards on 13 plays in the third quarter.

Flynn Appleby's punt after a three-and-out went only 36 yards and Iowa will start its next drive at its 46.
Deacon Hill is still in the game.

Drew Stevens kicked a 43-yard field goal after Deacon Hill's 54-yard pass to Zach Ortwerth.
Meanwhile, Hill might have hurt his hand on a third-and-10 incompletion.

Sebastian Castro broke up a third-and-3 pass and Iowa takes over at its 21 after the punt.

The Hawkeyes got a first down on their first possession of the second half after Leson Williams' 9-yard run on first down. A pair of incompletions followed, including a deep ball intended for Kaleb Brown that was overthrown by Deacon Hill.
Rutgers gets it back at its 26.

The Hawkeyes have limited Kyle Monangai, the Big Ten's leading rusher, to 39 rushing yards on 13 attempts.

Nick Jackson stopped Kyle Monangai for no gain on third-and-1, then a false start (Rutgers' fifth pre-snap penalty) before fourth-and-1 forced a punt from midfield.
Iowa takes over at its 14.

Deacon Hill at one point completed eight straight passes, but his red-zone INT spoils a promising Iowa drive.
"He's just gotta go back to work," Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz told Big Ten Network. "We need to eliminate those kind of plays. Left six points out there at a minimum. It'd be good to get rid of that stuff but there were some positive signs there."
Hill picked off
The best stretch of Deacon Hill's career ends in disaster. He threw toward Seth Anderson at the goal lie and Rutgers' Max Melton easily stepped in front of it for the interception. He bobbled it, but still came down with the pick with nine seconds left in the half.

Drew Stevens' 32-yard field goal put the Hawkeyes up 3-0 after a 10-play, 37-yard drive.
The big swing came on first down from the Rutgers 40. Instead of a sack, the Scarlet Knights were flagged for holding that moved the ball to the 30.

Jermari Harris could have been flagged for pass interference on third-and-6, but no call. After Rutgers' fourth false start, Flynn Appleby's punt went only 30 yards, out of bounds at the Iowa 49.

Deacon Hill completed a 17-yard pass to Leshon Williams to convert a third-and-5. Three plays later, a handoff to Jaziun Patterson couldn't move the chains on third-and-2 as Deion Jennings made the stop.
Iowa called timeout with the offense on the field prior to fourth-and-1 from its 40 and ended up punting. Rutgers takes over at its 10 after Tory Taylor's 50-yard boot.

Kaleb Brown picks up a first down, but passing game struggles
Kaleb Brown got a handoff on third-and-2 and ran over a defender as he gained 7 yards. A Jaziun Patterson run for no gain and two incomplete passes followed, though, and Rutgers gets it back at its 21 after recovering a muffed punt.
Deacon Hill is off to a 1-for-5 start passing.

Back-to-back false starts backed Rutgers up to a third-and-12 at the Iowa 47. The Scarlet Knights punted after a 5-yard run and Iowa will take over at its 5.

On the other sideline, Rutgers running back Kyle Monangai, the Big Ten’s leading rusher, is officially questionable.
