LIGHTNING DELAY AT BATES FIELD
Just after the National Anthem they announced we are in the middle of a lightning delay. So, we won't be starting at 7 p.m. I feel like a jinx. Anyway, opening kick between Linn-Mar and City High will be delayed.
Happy Friday the 13th! :)
West Delaware 29, Independence 21 (2:01 4th)
The Mustangs still have a chance here. Trey Weber with a 2-yard touchdown run after completing a long halfback pass. The 2-point conversion was no good.
LINN-MAR (4-3) at IOWA CITY HIGH (4-3)
Big game for both teams. Just inside the top-15 of the Class 5A RPI. A win helps the playoff cause. A loss and the playoff hopes are on life support. Stready rain here but no lightning. The natural grass appears to be holding on OK as well.
And there is a Dan Gable sighting as well.
West Delware 29, Independence 15 (4:12 4th)
Brent Yonkovic's 1-yard TD run makes this a two-score game with not much time left for the 3A ninth-ranked Mustangs. The 2-point conversion was stopped.
End 3rd: West Delaware 23, Independence 15
Memphis Voelker with a 44-yard touchdown run for West Delaware, followed by an 11-yard TD run from Independence's Trey Weber in the third quarter and successful 2-point conversions from both teams.
Tracking the playoff possibilities on these teams via RPI:
No. 3 Bettendorf (6-1, .6609) — The Bulldogs close at Cedar Rapids Prairie and at home against Iowa City High. Win both, and they are assured a top-four seed (probably 3) and the possibility of two home games.
No. 9 Cedar Rapids Prairie (4-3, .5692) — The leader of the 4-3 pack. The Hawks host Bettendorf on Friday, then go to Iowa City West in Week 9. Win twice, and Prairie has a lot of room yet to climb if dominoes above them fall the right way. They would pass any current 5-2 team that suffers a loss, with the possible exception of Kennedy, and they would probably pass Waukee even if the Warriors run the table. A split probably leaves Prairie in the 9-10 vicinity, and it would probably (barely) make the playoffs with two losses.
5A No. 8 Bettendorf (6-1) at 5A No. 10 Cedar Rapids Prairie (4-3)
Looking at an 8 p.m. kickoff at John Wall Field.
West Delaware 15, Independence 7 (1:37 2nd)
Memphis Voelker gives the Hawks the lead with a 3-yard touchdown run just before halftime. Quarterback Brent Yonkovic ran in the 2-point conversion.
West Delaware 7, Independence 7 (9:45 2nd)
Macoy Roling's 3-yard run gets the Hawks on the board and the ensuing extra point from Christian Timmerman ties the score. A long kickoff return put West Delaware in Independence territory.
Independence 7, West Delaware 0 (1:55 1st)
EJ Miller finds Brady Curt in the end zone for a 16-yard touchdown pass, the first score of the night around the state.
Early schedule changes due to weather
Looks like an iffy night, weather-wise. Some games have already canceled JV games to move up varsity start times.
Some altered varsity kickoff times even more:
• Independence at West Delaware, 5 p.m.
• Midland at Central City, 5:30 p.m.
• Anamosa at Northeast, 5:30 p.m.
• Waterloo Christian at Don Bosco, 6 p.m.
• Springville vs. Calamus-Wheatland (at Wyoming), 6 p.m.
