Williamsburg gets closer to its state championship goal

Peyton Driscoll struck out 12, Makenna Hughes delivered a home run and the speed of the Raiders on the bases was too much for Estherville-Lincoln Central in a Class 3A state softball semifinal.

Julia Roth made it interesting with a three-run home run and the Golden Eagles brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh, but the Knights hang on.

It'll be No. 2 Assumption vs. No. 1 Williamsburg in the Class 3A title game at 2:30 p.m. Friday. The Knights beat the Raiders 1-0 in a semifinal last year and finished runners-up.

Winterset has rallied from 3-0 down to take a 4-3 lead over Fort Dodge. Molly Breeding's fifth-inning sacrifice fly with the bases loaded provided the go-ahead run.

The top-ranked Jaguars put up eight runs in the fifth inning to end this one early and advance to the title game Thursday at 5 p.m.

In Class 4A, Fort Dodge has a 3-0 lead over Winterset after 2. Mackenzie McIlrath's first-inning RBI single led to an early pitching change for the Huskies. The Dodgers added another two runs after a double steal was followed by a groundout and infield single in the second.

Ankeny Centennial still up 3-1 over Southeast Polk after 4.
