Marion falls to Carlisle in 3A quarterfinals

Sixth-seeded Carlisle pieced together a five-run fifth inning to rally past third-seeded Marion, 5-2, Monday afternoon in a Class 3A state baseball tournament quarterfinal at Banks Field at Iowa City.

Marion (30-7) scored a run in the bottom of the first inning when Jake Miller walked, stole second and scored on a Kaden Frommelt triple to the fence in left-center field.

The Wolves took a 2-0 lead with a run in the third. Myles Davis walked with one out, stole second, then Frommelt walked. A wild pitch moved the runners up, with Isaac Scott hitting a sacrifice fly to right to score Davis.

Carlisle didn't have a hit until leadoff hitter Joe Goodhue beat out a grounder to shortstop with one out in the fifth for an infield single. That started the rally.

A walk and infield single off Marion pitcher Isaac Scott's shoe loaded the bases, then Scott grazed Tate Heidemann with an inside curveball to score a run.

After a strikeout for the second out, Carson Guthrie snuck one up the middle and into center field to tie the game at 2. Trey Lee followed by pulling a line-drive just fair inside the right-field line to clear the bases and give Carlisle a 5-2 lead.

Marion left two runners on in the sixth and one in the seventh.

A little hustle rallies Carlisle to the lead

Carlisle has rebounded for a five-run top of the fifth inning that has given it a 5-2 lead on Marion.

It all began with leadoff hitter Joe Goodhue beating out a routine chopper to shortstop for an infield hit with one out, Carlisle's first hit of the game. Marion shortstop Myles Davis, a University of Iowa recruit, appeared to lay back on the grounder, with Goodhue's hustle rewarded.

That was followed by a walk and an infield single up the box off pitcher Scott's shoe. Tate Heidemann was then hit by a pitch to score a run and make it a 2-1 game.

Scott was removed in favor of sophomore Austin Goodrich, who struck out Joey Marker swinging on a 3-2 pitch for a huge second out. But Carson Guthrie then snuck a single up the middle to score the tying run, and Trey Lee followed with a three-run triple just fair inside the right-field line.
